Usher Duties

  • Arrive 20 minutes early for the 8:30 Mass - 30 minutes early for 11:00.
  • Report to the lead usher; wear an usher's badge and your Shrine name tag.
  • Volunteer to greet people at the ramp entrance to the church before Mass,
    to release people for communion, to stay with the lead usher at the back
    of the church or to keep an eye on the gift shop during Mass.
  • Welcome people as they arrive and offer them the 'Order of Service'.
      Remind regulars to wear their name tag.
  • As Mass begins, close the outside glass doors and the middle inside doors. 
  • Take up the collections.  After going up the aisle, bow and wait about
    15seconds before beginning.
  • Release people for Communion.  Start when the presider drinks from the cup.
  • After Mass, open the doors as the procession begins.
  • Hand out bulletins.
  • Pick up papers left in pews; put kneelers and hymnals back in place.

 


Additional duties of the lead usher

Check to be sure these are in place before Mass:

  • 'Order of Service' handouts
  • Bulletins  (Place copies of the order of service and
    bulletins on the stand at the back ramp door.)
  • Prayer petition basket, pencils and paper
  • Bread and wine
  • Basket(s) to take the collection(s) to the altar

See that the quiet room door is unlocked.

Select:

  • two people from the congregation to present the gifts of bread and wine.
  • one or more ushers or members of the congregation to present the food basket.

If no one volunteers, select:

  • one or two ushers to greet people at the ramp entrance.
  • two ushers to release people for Communion.
  • one or more ushers to stay with you at the back of the church during Mass.
  • an usher to keep an eye on the gift shop.

Count those in attendance and record the number on the sheet on the bulletin board.

After Mass:

  • be sure the money on the altar has been picked up by the counters.
  • see that everything is straightened up.

8:30 lead usher

  • After Mass, take the prayer request basket off the altar and place it back on
    the offertory table.

11:00 lead usher

  • If fewer than six ushers are scheduled, select additional ushers to help
    with the collections.          
  • Unlock the outside side door before Mass and lock it again after Mass.
